Christine McVie’s will exposed as cause of death confirmed – huge fortune and auction

Fleetwood Mac star Christine McVie left a huge hole in the music world when she died on November 30, 2022 aged 79.

The singer-songwriter passed “peacefully at hospital following a short illness”, her heartbroken family confirmed at the time.

Now Christine’s cause of death has finally been confirmed, with documents stating she died of an ischaemic stroke – which occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced.

She had just been diagnosed with “metastatic malignancy of unknown primary origin”, with cancer spreading through her body with an undetected tumour.

Cancer was listed as the secondary cause of death on her death certificate.

Christine left behind a huge legacy of music, but also a huge fortune, when she died.

Though the exact details of her will haven’t been made public, the iconic musician had some of her items auctioned off after her death.

Daily Star explores where the rest ended up.

The singer, songwriter and keyboard player was worth an incredible sum of money when she passed away last year.

It’s not surprising after four decades in the music industry, joining Fleetwood Mac in 1970 – two years after she tied the knot with bassist John McVie.

Their 1977 album Rumors became one of the biggest selling albums of all time, selling more than 40million copies internationally and scooping the coveted Grammy award for Album of the Year.

Their track Don’t Stop, on which Christine performed lead vocals, even became presidential candidate Bill Clinton’s campaign song in 1992.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Christine had a fortune of $105million (£85million) upon her death.

Christine wasn’t married at the time of her death, having divorced her first husband John McVie back in 1976 and second hubby Eduardo Quintela in 2003.

She never had children, either, so it is unclear exactly who her fortune went to.

A month after her death, a number of Christine McVie’s instruments and outfits were sold at auction.

Taking place at Julien’s Auctions in early December 2022, the lot included the vintage maxi dress the star wore on the back cover of Rumors – and sold for an eye-watering $56,250 (£46,000).

The property sale, entitled Fleetwood Mac: Property From the Lives and Careers of Christine McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood, had been curated in part by Christine before she died.

Two of the star’s American Music Awards trophies were also sold off, along with a piano accordion, the polka-dot hippie dress she wore at the 1976 Rock Music Awards, a touring Hammond B3 organ and a speaker with microphones included.

Music catalogue flogged

The year before her death, Christine seemed to be getting her affairs in order as she opted to sell her musical back catalogue to music investment trust Hipgnosis.

The songstress sold her rights to future royalties from 115 songs to the music IP investment company, who also own the back catalogue of her band-mate Lindsey Buckingham.

Stevie Nicks earned an estimated $100million (£80million) from selling an 80% share of her own back catalogue in late 2020.

Back in 2015, seven years before her death, Christine made the decision to flog her 19-acre, Grade II Kent mansion for a whopping £3.5million.

The songstress was spending more and more of her time in London and away from the countryside at the time, so decided to part ways with the incredible property.

The stunning cottage-style house, named The Quaives, featured sprawling lawns, ivy-covered walls and six bedrooms.

She overhauled the whole estate after purchasing it in the 90s, leaving the stunning home with a marble-topped kitchen, huge fireplaces and a cosy living room.

In 2018 she decided to sell her Thames-side apartment in central London too – making a tidy sum of £3.6million for the three-bedroomed flat.

The home also featured 24-hour concierge service, a home sound speaker system and two en-suite bathrooms.

Of course, that didn’t leave Christine without a home to call her own, as she also owned a stunning house in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles.

It wasn’t always plain sailing when it came to money and Fleetwood Mac.

In fact, former star Lindsey Buckingham sparked a furious lawsuit over his dismissal from the band, which was eventually settled in 2018.

He sued the rest of the band, alleging breach of fiduciary duty and breach of oral contract, among other charges.

Fleetwood Mac “strongly disputed” the claims, though Lindsey later confirmed they had “signed off on something” later that year.

He confirmed to CBS This Morning: “I’m happy enough with it. I’m not out there trying to twist the knife at all. I’m trying to look at this with some level of compassion.”
