Worried fans reached out via Facebook to wish Fred the best, with one writing: “I am so sad to read this! My husband always watches Discovery & I saw an episode many years ago of Gold Rush, I adored you & continued to watch religiously because of you!

“My thoughts, prayers & love are with you on this journey. Enjoy what time you have & make any memories you can! My best friend just passed from lung/brain cancer 3 weeks ago.”

Someone else wrote a lengthy – and poignant – tribute to Fred, penning: “Fred I’ve been a fan for a long time. I’m not going to be like many and say false things like ‘you’ll beat this’.

“I know from patients I work with that people who say that cause a diagnosed person to feel very lonely since you know the reality of your diagnosis.

“Let me instead say I hope you receive top notch end of life care, love, support and empathy from all who you love and who love you. Your life has been lived with meaning, adventure, inspiration and creativity.

“My hope for you is that you feel all the amplitude of the meaningful life you have lived.
