One of the BBC’s most well-respected hosts has opened up on his promiscuous past as a teenager.
Jay Blades MBE is one of the biggest household names on the BBC, as he helps to bring life back into broken items on The Repair Shop. But the furniture restorer has admitted he would be more likely to break hearts than fix them while he was growing up.
Speaking on broadcaster Gyles Brandreth’s Rosebud podcast, Blades admitted there were a lot of girls who were let down by the host. He explained that at one time he was dating a pair of sisters that did not know about the other.

“We’re talking about lots of girls. There were a lot of broken hearts along the way,” he explained.
“There was even one point where I was going out with two sisters and they lived in the same house. It’s crazy — imagine that. I told them not to tell each other, and they didn’t. I think I had another girl as well. I was really bad.”
Jay added that he would regularly lie to the other girls that he had been elsewhere when he was spending time with one of his other partners. But the broadcaster insisted he was a nice guy, saying he “did make them laugh” all the time.
He confessed that having gone partying as a teenager, he quickly realised there were more women than men at soul events, compared to other gigs including reggae and ska nights. As a result, he quickly turned to becoming a true lothario in an attempt to pick up more girls.
Blades worked out that his two-timing behaviour started from as young as 12, describing his actions as “very naughty”. At the time, he could not explain why he would play around with so many girls, but after soul-searching, the Repair Shop host had a breakthrough.
The host believed that the reasoning for his bad behaviour was down to his troubled relationship with mum Barbara Cumberbatch. According to Jay, Barbara was aloof to her son, which caused him to go out “looking for that mother figure”.
“I didn’t have it with my mum, there wasn’t a real connection,” he explained. “There wasn’t motherly love from my mum, and I kind of understand — because when I got to meet my dad, when I was 21, I looked very similar to him.”
Jay’s dad had left her feeling mistreated and left by the wayside. He later chalked up the theory that due to his likeness to his father, mum Barbara began to resent him for what her former partner did to her.
He revealed that he has kept in touch with some of the women he two-timed, admitting: “I think they understand.” But Jay’s second wife Lisa Zbozen appears cautious of his promiscuity.
Gyles joked on the podcast: “She asked me to ask you, are you now monogamous? Will you just get it on record?” Jay responded: “Yes, 100%. My missus, ‘Tiny’, she’s wow.
“She’s come along at the right time in the sense I’ve grown up now and I’m so content. You need the right team around you.”
