ITV I’m A Celebrity medic reveals grim reason the celebs wear red socks in camp

The I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! crew make the cast wear red socks for a rather unexpected and pretty gross reason.

Former show medic Bob McCarron told Woman’s Own that the cast are highly likely to be bitten by creepy crawlies, including leeches, which can leave marks and traces of blood on the celebrities’ skin.

The bright red colour helps to mask the gruesome gashes and keep the illusion alive for the audience at home.Stars of the show wear a very specific – and iconic – uniform year upon year, which includes khaki shorts and hats, as well as red trousers and vests emblazoned with their names and numbers.

Bob has also previously spoken about some other ailments that can ravage through the camp as the celebs settle in for the show.

On the series’ spin-off show Extra Camp, McCarron said: “Most people think of fungus as mushrooms but we have problems with the cast every year, especially women, growing fungus on certain body parts [breasts]. I’ve been instructing them to use the shower and personal hygiene a little bit more often.”

The 23rd series stars Sunday 19 November 2023 and features a big batch of celebrity names ready to face their fears in the jungle. This year’s line up includes This Morning’s Josie Gibson, First Dates’ Fred Sirieix, JLS singer Marvin Humes, EastEnders’ Danielle Harold and politician Nigel Farage.

Another member of the all-star lineup, Jamie Lynn Spears, expressed her excitement ahead of joining the ITV competition show. She said: “There is literally every misconception you can have on a person about me so I don’t take any of it seriously.”

“But I do think going on I’m A Celebrity will be a nice way for people to see the real me. This is an opportunity to be myself and do something really cool and have some awesome experiences in the meantime.”

However, her future co-star Josie said that as her stint on the show was “fast approaching,” she began to feel “anxious” as she let it sink in.
