John Whaite has said that “life is difficult” while addressing his relationship with former Strictly dance partner Johannes Radebe.
The TV chef reached the final of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing with show-pro Johannes in 2021 and recently admitted he “fell in love” with him during the series.
Earlier this month, Johannes confessed he’d caught feelings for the dancer despite being in a long-term relationship with his now fiancée Paul Atkins.

But he’s now admitted that the reason he spoke about his relationship with Johannes in his new book Dancing on Eggshells in order to prove that “life is difficult” and that we are all “fragile human beings.”
Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine on Thursday (August 24) with host Christine Lampard, he said: “The reason I’ve spoken about that story, and specifically with Johannes’ consent and with my partner’s consent.
“I haven’t written anything that people didn’t want me to write.
“The reason I’ve spoken about that story is I wanted to illustrate the point that life is difficult, we are fragile human beings and our hearts sometimes can be torn into two.
He went on: “Sometimes you just have to take stock and think to yourself ‘Who am I?’, what my values are, and ‘how do I get back to that?’.”
John added: “The whole book is a story of love. If it weren’t for my partnership with Paul, where we speak candidly and honestly about how we feel, I don’t know where I would be alive.”

The Bake Off winner has opened up about how the Strictly curse got to him and confessed he and partner Paul spent some time apart at one point before reconciling.
John told The Times: “I fell in love with him. I can’t speak for him – because I’m not allowed to, legally – but it felt like there was love there. We had so much in common.
“We had some similar stories growing up – the homophobia, the bullying, coming out, coming to terms with our sexuality – as any queer kid would.
“And there was just a beautiful symmetry about it because it was on the other side of the earth [John is from Lancashire and Johannes is South African].”
Admitting he still ‘loves’ his former dance partner, John continued: “He’s black and I’m white, yet we still have that lived experience. It shows how we’re human. So, yes I fell in love with Johannes. I still love Johannes, of course I do.”
John’s autobiography Dancing on Eggshells is available to buy now.
