Love Island bosses hire 'armed security guards' and 'electric gates' for winter series

Love Island bosses have reportedly upped their security measures as the winter series prepares to launch.

The ITV2 dating show has been hit with security breaches in the past – but this year the team aren’t letting anyone get too close to the new singletons heading into the villa.

As Maya Jama prepares to head up the series based in aa whopping £1.2million pad in South Africa, a source has revealed to The Sun how they intend to keep everyone safe.

The Ludus Magnus villa is protected by high voltage gates, which will be fully manned by trained guards on the perimeters.

A Love Island insider has claimed that their plan is to make Ludus as secure as possible, while also making sure the contestants aren’t scared and remain relaxed and comfortable.

The insider told the publication that there is a hotline connected to the local police station and private armed response companies, adding: “If any threat is larger than expected, the heavy cavalry would be on their way in seconds”.

They explained that the security of the contestants and the crew is of the “utmost concern” and will come first.

It was also explained that all production crew coming in and out will have armed escorts and security briefings will be given regarding what dangers to look for.

The measures put in place comes after a surge of crime in South Africa which has seen organised gangs often target wealthy visitors.

Previously, the Love Island villa has been successfully broken into in Majorca, prompting ITV bosses to take extra caution as they moved elsewhere.

In 2021 it was revealed that a YouTuber had been caught breaking into the villa while the contestants were asleep.

While security guards managed to catch him, he was able to get into the villa and filmed himself under some fluorescent lights before a voice was heard shouting “you’re trespassing” and he was dragged out.

Luckily, as a new wave of islanders prepare to enter the villa in mere weeks, the site will be incredibly secure.

Love Island returns this January on ITV2 and ITVX
