Major BBC Breakfast shake-up as Jon Kay forced to present alone with co-star gone

BBC Breakfast was involved in a major shake-up on Christmas Day as presenter Jon Kay was left to host the show all alone.

His usual Monday to Wednesday co-star Sally Nugent was nowhere to be seen, at least on the red sofa, as Jon took up space all by himself. Starting off the day in a festive tie sitting by the Christmas tree, Jon later switched things up and donned a Christmas jumper to chat to TV chef Nigella Lawson.

Thankfully weather presenter Carol Kirkwood was also on the scene, and they both paid tribute to the missing Sally in a video teaser for the festive edition of Strictly Come Dancing, in which she’s participating with professional dancer Graziano Di Prima. But fans weren’t too chuffed to see Jon all by himself.

Taking to X – formerly known as Twitter – one penned: “Merry Christmas @BBCBreakfast. I’m absolutely staggered that you’ve only one presenter working today. I pay my licence fee to watch [two] people converse, not one man talk to himself!”

Others were loving the festive edition of the programme, as one wrote: “Happy Christmas Jon and family and Carol and family have a fantastic day!” Another echoed: “Good morning Jon. Wishing you & the team on #BBCBreakfast a very Merry Christmas. Thank you all for bringing us the news on Christmas Day!”

Earlier in the show, Carol and Jon both confessed why they’d volunteered to work on Christmas Day – and it might have left both of them on Santa’s naughty list. Jon asked Carol: “Carol, are you cooking or being cooked for later?” and she responded: “I’m being cooked for! That’s one of the joys of working on Christmas Day. Just saying!”

Jon then asked her: “Is that why you’re working on Christmas Day, Carol?” and she confirmed: “I volunteer every year Jon!” He quipped back: “And now we know why!”

When Carol wondered what Jon’s festive lunch situation was, he told her: “Same ploy being played by me. Absolutely. We’re in it together!”

TV chef Nigella Lawson also had fans talking online as she confessed she does the cooking, and finally explained her mispronunciation of the word ‘microwave’. She famously called it the ‘meecro-wahvey’ on a festive special – and now refuses to name the appliance at all.

She explained: “What’s quite interesting is a lot of people got in touch with me to tell me what their family mispronunciations are. So many families do have that; they mispronounce a word either because a child in the family could never say it properly and that’s become part of their family language, or just because they make jokes and they stick.

“I’m not [going to say it again]. It’s made me quite self-conscious now. I tend to refer to it as the ‘you know what’ now,” she said in a candid admission.
