Matthew Perry cause of death clue as autopsy toxicology report comes back

Matthew Perry’s initial autopsy results are in, and they give some truly eye-opening details into the Friends star’s final hours.

The actor was found dead at age 54 in his hot tub at his home in Los Angeles. Emergency services were called to a suspected drowning, after his assistant found Perry with his head underwater. No narcotics were found at the scene, with his autopsy “deferred” pending further investigation.

Now, however, initial drug reports have come back clear, TMZ reports. The reports allegedly confirm that he didn’t have meth or fentanyl in his system. But more in-depth tests will continue to be carried out – a process that could take weeks or months to complete.

Matthew was always candid about his struggles with alcohol and drug dependency, though he discussed his sobriety in his book released last year. During a sweep for narcotics, none were found – authorities only discovered anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and a drug for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at his home.

Simultaneously, robbery homicide cops are reportedly investigating the death despite no signs of foul play. As the Los Angles County Coroner deferred the cause of death, it’s standard procedure for the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division to investigate high-profile cases.

Piecing together the timeline of his death, Matthew played pickleball with a female friend on Saturday morning (October 28), who described him as “fatigued”. He later returned to his home, sent an assistant out on an errand, and two hours later was found dead in his outdoor jacuzzi at 4pm.

His staffer made a 911 call as Matthew supposedly suffered a cardiac arrest, with the 15-second clip referring to a potential drowning. This week, the main Friends cast paid an emotional tribute to their co-star, telling Us Weekly: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family.

“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able,” they continued. “For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

Speaking about his addiction battle while still filming Friends, Perry said it’s possible to “track the trajectory” of his addictions from his appearance on the show. Matthew penned: “When I’m carrying weight, it’s alcohol; when I’m skinny, it’s pills. When I have a goatee, it’s lots of pills.”

By the end of season three, he was taking 55 Vicodin pills a day, “faking migraines” and “finding crooked nurses” who would help feed his addiction.
