Only Fools and Horses actress Gwyneth Strong looks unrecognizable in a 50-year-old snap
Fans of the iconic British BBC sitcom will fondly remember Gwyneth for her portrayal of the iconic character Cassandra Trotter. However, a recent throwback has left fans stunned at the star’s transformation.
Gwyneth was introduced as Cassandra in 1989 and became known for her sensible and intellectual character. In a vintage snapshot, the actress appears as a fresh-faced 13-year-old, far removed from the Cassandra Trotter we all remember. In this striking image, Gwyneth is seen starring in the horror film, Nothing but the Night, as Mary Valley.

She sports a long-sleeved polo jumper adorned with three dangling bracelets and shoots a smile at the camera as she gazes into the distance. While her signature fringe remains intact, her hair cascades down to just above her elbows as she leans against a tree trunk.
Gwyneth was merely a teenager during her time on the film set, which meant she couldn’t attend the movie premiere due to her age. Gwyneth’s final appearance as Cassandra in Only Fools and Horses was in the 2003 finale and the Christmas special titled Sleepless in Peckham.
The series concluded on a high note, with Cassandra and Rodney welcoming a baby girl named Joan, paying homage to Del Boy (David Jason) and Rodney’s mother. Reflecting on the show’s lasting impact, Gwyneth, during an appearance on Loose Women in 2022, remarked: “It seems to have done that thing where it goes across the generations. So now we get kids coming and saying I want to get an autograph, and my grandad got me into the show.”
She went on to express the special feeling of connecting with fans across different age groups. A recent Channel 5 documentary titled, Only Fools and Horses: Secrets and Scandals, unveiled that other stars were considered for the role of Cassandra.
Author Mike Jones disclosed: “Most notably Liz Hurley. She auditioned for the role, and it was felt that perhaps she was probably a little too glamorous for… how can I say it diplomatically? Our lanky Trotter brother.” Despite rising to fame as Cassandra, the 63-year-old actress has continued to make her mark in the entertainment world.
She has appeared in various television shows, including Casualty, Midsomer Murders, Doctors, and EastEnders.
