Rhod Gilbert 'weirdly fine and optimistic' as he issues update on cancer battle

Comedian Rhod Gilbert has broken his silence after being rushed to hospital amid his tragic stage four cancer diagnosis.

The funnyman, 54, announced that he had stage four cancer in July, admitting he “doesn’t really know what to say” about the heart breaking health news.

Over the festive period, he was rushed to hospital alongside wife Sian, who told her Twitter followers they had been in A&E, but did not go into detail as to why.

In his first interview since undergoing cancer treatment, the Welshman revealed he thinks about his cancer 24/7 but added there is “humour in it.”

He told the Guardian: “It does feel weird. I don’t know how much to talk about the cancer. I haven’t really worked out what to say.

“I’m really aware of mental health now and I’m checking in with myself every day. I feel fine, weirdly. I’m happy, optimistic and hopeful that next year it’ll all come good.”

The star went on to explain that despite having to give up his social life and his job, he is committed to poking fun at serious topics in his upcoming tour, The Book Of John.

“When I get through this, the next show will be in a similar vein. The cancer is on my mind 24/7, but, when I’m well enough to write, I’m jotting down a few things. And there is humour in there, definitely.”

Rhod said: “I’m feeling good and feel like I’m recovering day-by-day.”

The comedian added that he is also looking forward to the rescheduled tour dates for 2023, which have been pushed back until the summer.

Rhod has thanked his fans on social media for their “kind words and well wishes.”

Rhod is TV regular, having appeared on Mock The Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You and he was the permanent presenter of Never Mind The Buzzcocks for its final series in 2011.

The Welshman has also hosted his own shows, Ask Rhod Gilbert, Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience and Rhod Gilbert’s Teen Tribes.
