Strictly Come Dancing star leaves show and admits it’s ‘not his favourite memory’

Jody Cundy has admitted that getting booted from Strictly on Sunday (October 15) isn’t the fondest memory from his career.

Born with a deformed foot, which was amputated at the age of three, the Cambridgeshire athlete never had it easy. But in a testament to his incredible powers of resilience, he ignored the naysayers and dedicated his life to sport.

Through hard work and determination, he excelled in not just cycling but swimming as well, winning eight gold, one silver and three bronze medals for Team GB at the Paralympic Games. Therefore, it goes without saying that he does not like to lose.

With that being said, the 45-year-old wanted to prove he had what it takes to win the glitterball trophy. Alas, on movie week, his American Smooth performance to ‘Married Life’ from ‘Up’ failed to impress the judges, scoring just 20 points, which left him bottom of the leaderboard.

Consequently, he ended up in the bottom two, and despite dancing his heart out, the judges sided with Eddie Cadi. Unsurprisingly, the British icon was rendered devastated by the decision, and during an interview with Fleur East on It Takes Two, he spoke candidly about his experience on the show.

The sportsman said: “It’s not the greatest memory. I’ve really enjoyed this. So, like, just knowing that I’m not going to do it again, it’s been pretty hard, but I have had a fun time while I’ve been here.”

He continued: “They’re not the greatest memories….,” he added. “We did get some fun out of it. It was good fun to perform, I had some fun doing it, but we did go home off it, so it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it as the golds that I won in Rio.”

But while he feels defeated right now, he made a fantastic friendship during his time on Strictly. The sporting legend formed a close bond with his partner, Jowita Przystał, whom he credits for his dancing development. And it’s fair to say she’s extremely happy with everything he did during his three weeks on our screens.

She said: “We were trying really hard. I think we did it; I think last Saturday night, you really came out of your shell. If I compare where I was day one to where I am now. I kind of just wish I did a little bit better.”

Jody concluded: “Sadly, it’s the end of my journey, but I’ve had a whale of a time, and she’s been amazing.”

Despite his feelings right now, while one door closes, another has opened. With filming out of the way, he can set his sights on training for the 2024 games, in which he’ll aim to inspire kids with disabilities across the country to give sport a try.
