This Morning viewers moved to tears by cerebral palsy sufferer’s ‘traumatic’ ordeal

A man with cerebral palsy has moved This Morning viewers after he revealed the abuse he suffered at the hands of his wife and her lover.

Speaking on This Morning, Tom Somerset-How explained the suffering he underwent where he was left in bed and isolated from friends and family by his wife Sarah and his carer George Webb, who would later become Sarah’s lover. The pair have been prosecuted and are due to be sentenced next month.

Wheelchair user Tom, who requires 24-hour care, told ITV Alison and Dermot how he was left in “squalor” for two years that left him weighing less than seven stone until he was “rescued” by police, social services and his family in 2020.

Speaking alongside his twin sister Kate, Tom described the two years where he was rarely washed or allowed out of bed and was left alone for weekends instead of receiving the 24-hour care he needs.

Tom told This Morning viewers and presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary about the “squalor” he was forced to live in

After detailing the extent of Tom’s ordeal in a video overview, Dermot and Alison sat down to speak with Tom who described what happened as “terrible”.

Tom revealed he’s sought help as he told This Morning: “I’m doing okay. I’ve started counselling in the last month or so and I’m working through it day by day really.”

When asked about his wife Sarah’s affair with carer George, who had moved in full time with the couple from 2016, Tom shared: “I knew there was something going on but I didn’t know for sure.”

Tom’s weight plummeted to under seven stone due to the abuse he suffered at the hands of wife Sarah and her lover George

Tom continued as he revealed he would be left alone for entire weekends whilst Sarah and George spent time together, and was often left hungry with a minimal meal of a sandwich and crisps to eat.

It wasn’t until 2020 when he was finally rescued by a joint intervention from police, social services and Tom’s family that the true extent of the squalor was revealed as Tom’s weight had dropped to less than seven stone, his hair was long and unwashed and his nails uncut.

Visibly moved, Alison told Tom: “You’re one of the bravest people I’ve met.”

Presenter Dermot then praised Tom for his “mental resilience” as he described being left alone for eight hours a day and isolated from all friends and family.

Presenters Dermot and Alison were left in shock at the “squalor” in which Tom lived until 2020

Viewers at home were moved to tears by Tom’s story, as they rushed to social media to send messages of support.

One viewer wrote: “Jesus, what a way to treat the poor man.”

Another added: “Wow how f****** disgusting them 2 are”.

“What an intelligent , strong articulate man Tom Somerset is . Shame on his vile ‘wife’ and the ‘Carer ‘ who treated him like that,” said a third.

A fourth shared: “Tom, you have our undying respect. God bless you.”

A fifth tweeted: “Poor Tom absolutely shocking care he received, there is so evil people. This could happen to anyone.”

Another added: “Tom Somerset….what an incredible, strong person you are.”
