BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay missing from sofa as co-star replaces him in shake-up

Jon Kay was absent from BBC Breakfast during the latest broadcast.

Viewers ae used to seeing Jon host the early morning programme with Sally Nugent at the start of the week. From Monday until Wednesday, you’ll catch the pair discussing the latest headlines in the Salford-based studio.

However, Jon was missing from the red sofa on Tuesday (July 2), which might’ve caused some viewers to look twice at their screens. Instead, a shake-up saw his co-star Ben Thompson step in to host the show with Sally.

With just 48 hours until the general election on Thursday (July 4), the pair were speaking a lot about politics before Brits go to the polling booths. They grilled PM Rishi Sunak, Labour’s Wes Streeting and the SNP’s Westminster leader Stephen Flynn during the show.

Jon joined BBC Breakfast back in 2009 and became a permanent presenter in 2022 following the exit of previous host Dan Walker, who moved to Channel 5. Jon and Sally have been hosting the show as a pair ever since.

When he took over, Jon said: “I’m over the moon to become the new regular presenter of BBC Breakfast and I’m looking forward to bringing our brilliant viewers the very latest news each morning alongside my good friend Sally and the rest of the team.

It’s not the first presenter shake up we’ve seen in the BBC Breakfast studio over the last few weeks. Last month, Sally was replaced by Sarah Campbell on the show. He wrote on social media: “Good morning from your BBC Breakfast team. Lovely to have Sarah with us – covering for Sally this week.”

In the same announcement post, the TV host marked a significant 12-month anniversary for the programme. He added: “It was exactly a year ago today that we moved into our lovely new studio.”

Jon continued: “Over the last 12 months our team has interviewed hundreds of guests on the sofa, covered thousands of stories and last month welcomed the BBC News at One to join us in Salford. Happy Birthday studio!”
