BBC News host caught in awkward autocue blunder as fans brand star ‘Anchorman’

One BBC News anchor recently had an epic mishap that has left fans giggling.

Maryam Moshiri hosted the show and began a segment with: “They are known for their big eyes and for being famously sleepy – am I talking about myself here? No, sorry. No. For the last 20 years, the number of hazel dormice, yes, hazel dormice, has declined by as much as 70% across the UK.”

“It’s hoped that a new project, which sees them re-released into their natural…habit…could help them restore their population.” Maryam paused on the word habit as she maintained composure before quipping: “Is it habit or habitat? I’m probably going to get emails about this. It [says] habit on the autocue so what can I say? Nicola Haseler has more, I’m Ron Burgundy,” she joked, referencing the popular comedy movie Anchorman.

After the clip played, BBC News cut back to the presenter in the studio as she called the video “very sweet”. She then addressed her earlier mishap by saying: “I, of course, meant ‘habitat’ but ‘habit’ was written on the autocue, which just shows you that I just read whatever is written in front of me really!”

In the caption, the post read: “This morning’s light relief-from-the-election ‘And Finally’ story focussed on hazel dormice and @BBCMaryam had her Ron Burgundy moment. It’s great to see some ‘personality’ returning to the channel when the mood permits.”

Down in the replies, Maryam responded: “I felt a bit like Ron Burgundy! Actually thought maybe ‘habit’ was a special word for a dormouse’s ‘habitat’. Sharply and quickly corrected by the team in my ear! What they put up with [laughing and facepalm emojis].”

More of her fans rushed to share their thoughts on the cheeky video as one person branded her quips “outstanding,” another as “good fun” while a third simply wrote: “She’s the best,” and signed off with a red heart emoji.

Back in December, Maryam landed herself in hot water after she was forced to apologise for another cheeky on-air blunder. The presenter was caught flashing a middle finger to the camera and she later explained: “When we got to 1 [during the countdown], I turned [my] finger around as a joke and did not realise that this would be caught on camera.”
