One BBC star made their on-screen orgasm so convincing that nobody could tell if they were acting or not.
Back in 2006, a new miniseries based on a book by Alan Hollinghurst hit our TV screens. The Line of Beauty starred Dan Stevens as leading man Nick Guest, who is invited to stay at the home of his Oxford University chums – who is the son of a Conservative MP.
Sound familiar to 2023 release Saltburn? The coincidences don’t stop there, as Nick becomes enthralled with the lives of the rich family. The series documents his romance with boyfriend Leo, who is eventually diagnosed with AIDS – leaving Nick terrified.

There are plenty of raunchy scenes to be had in the miniseries, with MP Gerald carrying on an affair with one of his secretaries and Nick eventually outed, destroying his relationship with his would-be new family. And in one scene, there’s an “audible” female orgasm that not even author Hollinghurst could distinguish between real and fake.
The raunchy scenes were Dan Stevens’ first ever on camera. He admitted to the BBC at the time: “[Leo star] Don [Gilet] was great fun to work with and he made things very easy. It wasn’t difficult; we just got on with them really.
“What we tried to do is make them look beautiful and to show that, particularly with the Leo relationship, this was a loving relationship. That first sex scene is Nick’s first sexual experience and it’s a great surprise and joy to him. It’s not easy to do but I’ve never done any straight sex scenes on camera so I imagine they’re just as hard to get right.”
Dan went on: “I really was in at the deep end and on set all day every day. There wasn’t a day when I wasn’t filming over the nine-week shoot. Other characters would come and go so I sometimes felt like I was receiving guests on set!
“It was pretty quick but I think that’s the best way to learn. People ask if I was terrified but I was actually really excited. It’s what I’ve always wanted, a lead role in something.”

Fans of the show were keen to urge others to view it, with one writing on IMDb: “Stevens is brilliant, effortlessly capturing the essence of the well-meaning and ingratiating Nick, and he is formidably supported by all concerned, from the key players (McInnerny, Atwell, Krige) to the host of fantastic cameos on display. A must-see for anyone who came-of-age in Thatcher’s Britain.”
Somebody else agreed: “I recommend tuning in, (especially if you’re gay) for the sex scenes alone but also for the clever portrayal of the Thatcherite years and how it both destroyed and made the country we are all living in today.”
