Beloved BBC sitcom star dies as touching tributes paid to veteran actor

John Clegg has sadly passed away at the age of 90.

The veteran actor famously played Gunner Graham in the 1970s BBC sitcom, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. He also appeared in the classic comedy Dad’s Army.

Announcing his death on Tuesday (August 20), BAFTA member Morris Bright said: “We is very sorry indeed to hear that La Di Da Gunner Graham, actor John Clegg, has gone to that great concert party in the sky, aged 90. He certainly was one of the boys who entertained us.”

The late actor’s most recent roles were in the 2001 film Bridget Jones’s Diary, where he played an unnamed elderly man. In 2003, he also appeared in TV film Death in Holy Orders, which was based on the book by P. D. James.

In this title, he played the role of Father John Betterton. This was finally followed by the 2006 short Tommy the Kid in which he played a police officer.

Fans have been left heartbroken after the tragic news. The British Comedy Society posted on X: “We’re saddened to learn of the death of actor John Clegg, best known as It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’s Padrewski, Gunner Graham. He was 90.”

While a third penned: “RIP to lah-do-dah Gunner Graham, the actor John Clegg. A good innings from an actor who was always a strong and stable presence on screen. #ItAintHalfHotMum”

Whilst a fourth posted: “Desperately saddened to read that actor John Clegg, probably best known as La Di Da Gunner Graham from It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, has died aged 90. A life well lived and a joyous presence on our screens. #rip”
