BGT star makes cheeky swipe at Simon Cowell after replacing him on ITV show

Britain’s Got Talent star Ashley Banjo had made a rather cheeky dig at Simon Cowell.

The Diversity champ first appeared on the ITV talent show back in 2009 where the dance group were crowned as the series winners, and have since become BGT legends, coming back to perform in 2020.

In the same year, Ashley replaced bigwig Simon Cowell on the judging panel after he needed some time off following a back injury. When asked what it was like to fill Simon’s shoes, Ashley quipped: “Well, they are not normal shoes. No more normal trousers,” as he made a cheeky reference to his notoriously high trousers.

Talking further about the experience, Ashley added: “I think that it was a full circle moment for me to be sitting on the panel when I still remember performing on the stage for the first time and Simon saying, ‘And who are you?’ And me saying, ‘Oh, we’re Diversity.’

“And then I’m sitting in his chair with my name under the big X. And that’s also the same year 2020, that lockdown happened. And it’s the same year that we had 30,000 people complaining about us.

“That was maybe the craziest year in my life, like all of that coming together. It was lockdown, I had a one-year-old, and I had a newborn. I was a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.

“Then we became the most complained about thing on TV for the past decade, and we won a BAFTA. It was a surreal 12 months, really thinking back to it, but hey, that’s life…”

Ashley, 36, will be hosting the Pride of Britain Awards this year alongside Countdown legend Carol Vorderman. The event will be taking place on Monday, October 21, and celebrate inspirational heroes from across the nation.

He commented: “The night is not about me. It’s not about Carol. It’s not about anyone in the audience. This is about the people, the winners. I think that helps me stay grounded because if I think about the scale of the event and what needs to go right, I’m like ‘Woah’.
