‘Chilling’ Hugh Grant’s sinister new horror role leaves fans deeply ‘unsettled’

Hugh Grant has taken on a “chilling” new role.

The loveable British actor is known for his charm and quick wit, starring in heart-warming films such as Paddington 2, Love Actually, Bridget Jones and Notting Hill, but Grant’s latest project sees him take on an entirely new persona.

Heretic is a psychological horror film starring Hugh alongside Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, Elle McKinnon, Carolyn Adair and River Codack. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 8 September and follows the story of two Mormon missionaries.

They try to convert Hugh’s character but terrifyingly, he “turns out to be far more dangerous than they could have anticipated”. A24, the masterminds behind Midsommar and Hereditary, is the production company on Grant’s new endeavour.

After watching the premiere, someone on X/Twitter wrote: “Heretic is thrilling from start to finish. [Three] pretty electric performances but Hugh Grant is truly just unsettling. The ideas this film challenges paired with its great technical work just blew me away, loved every second.”

Another Grant admirer tweeted: “Genre fans, you are in for a treat with Heretic. This is a wild roller coaster ride of a horror film that masterfully blends dynamic characters, dark humour, enormous tension and provocative ideas. Hugh Grant’s chilling, menacing performance is one of the best of his career.”

Underneath, Hugh fans gushed that they are “genuinely looking forward to seeing him” in the film, that the actor is “f***ing brilliant,” that they are “intrigued” to see his next project and even praised Grant by saying he is “on such a hot streak right now with his performances.

One kind film fan even asked: “Will he finally get the Oscar he deserves?”
