Coronation Street might be preparing to welcome back two iconic characters for Les Battersby’s funeral.
The character, portrayed by Bruce Jones, first made his appearance on the soap in 1997 along with his wife Janice (Vicky Entwistle), his daughter Leanne (Jane Danson) and stepdaughter Toyah (Georgia Taylor).
After Janice and Les’ notorious split due to Janice falling for Dennie Stringer (Charles Dale), Les found new love with Cilla Brown (Wendi Peters). However, in 2007, actor Bruce exited the show, and Les hasn’t been seen since. But in October, it was confirmed that the soap would be writing off the character.
Last week on the cobbles, it was revealed that Les had passed away off-screen. Leanne was informed of Les’ death by a police officer, who told her that he had died at work. The news left both Leanne and Les’ former stepson Chesney (Sam Aston) heartbroken, reports Lancs Live.
Moreover, this week on the soap, it’s revealed that there’s more to Les’ death than initially meets the eye. Spoilers indicate that solicitor Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) has a meeting with Leanne.
Joining her are Les’ former stepchildren Toyah Habeeb (Georgia Taylor), Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) and Chesney, as Adam shares some news. According to him, the abattoir where Les had been working has offered his family £50,000 as compensation for his workplace death. However, they must sign an NDA to receive it.
Soap buffs are buzzing with speculation that if the programme broadcasts Les’s funeral, two old faces will pop back up. On a Corrie fan page, one user commented: “Let’s have Janice and Cilla back for Les’s funeral proper comedy punch up lol.”
One fan theorised on the potential for financial drama, posting: “Cilla will be after the compo / Janice will be there for our Leanne. Money will help Ches out as well if Leanne shares it around,” Others piled on with their predictions, as another exclaimed: “Yes! How funny would that be.” While a third chimed in with: “That be worth watching.”
These musings follow some fans’ fears that Les may have met a grim end. The online community has been abuzz with theories, with one person questioning: “Anyone else think he was killed?” Another suggested foul play stating: “There’s something dodgy happening definitely.”
Some even speculated that Leanne might have done the deed, pointing to her recent turbulent year, saying: “Leanne killed Les? She could be in middle of a breakdown after the institute and Toyah’s affair?” This theory gained traction with another fan who emphatically responded: “Yes to this!”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
