EastEnders legend teases huge return to BBC soap 12 years after being killed off

An EastEnders icon has teased a possible return despite being killed off from the soap in 2012.

Cheryl Fergison was cast as loveable Heather Trott in 2007 after previously appearing briefly on the BBC show as a pal of Big Mo Harris. She remained in Albert Square for five years, but met her demise after being struck with a photo frame by Ben Mitchell.

She later reprised the role posthumously in 2016, meanwhile, appearing as a voice over on tape recording discovered by Dot Cotton on her last very shift in the launderette. On Saturday 57-year old Cheryl took to Instagram to share a cryptic message with her 53,000 followers.

The actress posted a selfie from her car, adding the caption: “Are you still watching this space? Soon all will be revealed.”

The mystery prompted her fans to immediately speculate that she was referring to a return to Walford somehow. One responded: “Come on Heather dig your way out of that grave.” Another added: “So hope you are coming back to EE with Shirley.”

A third added: Cheryl would make a good step mum for Mandy’s stepson. New storyline.” And a fourth urged: “Come on Cheryl, don’t keep us in suspense.” One pal seemingly in the know, however, also teased:” Always and I am so excited for you to spread the news, a very deserved reveal. Fabulous yesss.”

An Enders source explained at the time of her exit in the Sun “Heather’s character has been hugely popular over the years, but the decision has been taken to cut her out of the show before viewers tire of her.”

Cheryl was clearly miffed by the decision, and later hit back at bosses in an interview with the Mirror. She slemmed the production, describing it as “out of touch” as ratings plummeted.

“They need to bring it back down to earth a bit”, she said. “When the sensational stuff becomes like a movie, it becomes a bit like a blur. Arthur stealing the money, Den and Angie’s divorce papers, those were the hearts and lives of real people. The producers need to go out and talk to people.” Cheryl added: “If you wanted explosions, you’d watch Fast and Furious.”
