Eurovision’s Bambie Thug forced to make last minute change or face contest ban

Eurovision act Bambie Thug was forced to make a last minute change or not go on stage.

The Eurovision Song Contest’s grand finale unfolded on Saturday night (May 11) in Sweden. Initially, 26 countries were down to compete but after a contentious decision by the European Broadcasting Union, Dutch contestant Joost Klein was disqualified, leaving 25 remaining acts.

But it appears Ireland’s gothic star Bambie Thug could have gotten into trouble too. They had to change up their act in order to be allowed to perform at the event.

Irish entrant Bambie Thug, who quickly became a hit with viewers at home, was among those who managed to compete. However, in a now-deleted TikTok video, the singer disclosed how they almost didn’t make it to the stage and had to remove some of their face makeup to be allowed to compete.

In the video, Bambie sported “ceasefire now| written on their face, expressing direct support for Palestine amidst its ongoing conflict with Israel. The clip revealed that they were instructed to wipe off the makeup if they wished to perform, adhering to the EBU’s rules against making any political statement.

Despite complying with the request, Bambie appeared visibly distressed and labelled the situation as “f****d up” while their makeup was being removed, leaving a noticeable strip of bare skin. Another performer chimed in, stating: “The fact they’ve silenced you is f****d. You say it straight after.”

This isn’t the first instance of acts voicing their support for Palestine, with numerous competing delegations previously expressing their disapproval of Israel’s participation. Before the live broadcast, Belgium aired a public service announcement advocating for a ceasefire, reports OK!.

Spain also expressed concerns over Israel’s involvement, following a Spanish journalist who has reported on Eurovision for over ten years publicly criticising Israeli journalists for intimidating them on the streets of Malmo amidst escalating protests.

Israel’s representative Eden Golan sailed through the semi-finals earlier this week, despite a mixed response from the audience including several boos and chants of ‘Free Palestine’. However, her final performance received a more positive reaction, with cheers of support significantly outnumbering the boos.

The primary backlash regarding her involvement originates from Israel’s ongoing conflict with Palestine in the Gaza Strip, with a significant number of people believing that Israel should have been prohibited from participating while involved in active warfare – a restriction that has been placed on Russia due to its continuous war with Ukraine over the past three years.
