Former Coronation Street stars and superfans have blasted the soap for losing its way.
Bruce Jones, 71, inset, who played layabout Les Battersby, has slammed its writers for penning so many murders and for losing its fun factor. He said: “I watched it from day one, but now my wife says it’s not worth watching.
“You can’t have that many murders on one street. It’s not the actors’ fault. They’re all doing a good job, but it’s the writers that have changed.

“I think we’ve lost that element of what Manchester life is all about. The writers we had were living Manchester city life.”
Bruce thinks the show’s focus needs to change to make it must-see viewing again. He added: “Get it back to what Coronation Street was… a community. The comedy was there and the tragedy came after.”
Beverley Callard, 67, who played Liz McDonald for decades, recently blasted the writers for their scripts about social issues. She said: “I think with a lot of television now, it’s issue-led and I hate that.”
Corrie bosses are drafting in a new producer to give the show a boost. Kate Brooks, who has had success at the helm on Emmerdale and Hollyoaks, will be joining later this month.
