Gavin and Stacey star breaks silence on show return rumours and says ‘it’s lovely’

Rumours of a Gavin and Stacey reunion have been rife for a number of weeks.

One of its title characters has finally addressed the speculation. Joanna Page, who played Stacey in the BBC sitcom, is reportedly being lined up for a return alongside the majority of the show’s original cast including writers James Corden (Smithy) and Ruth Jones (Nessa), and co-stars Matthew Horne (Gavin) and Rob Brydon (Bryn).

Filming has reportedly been scheduled to begin in the summer with a bidding war for broadcasting rights said to have emerged with streaming giant Netflix keen on gaining rights from the Beeb.

The show first broadcast in 2007 and ran for three years, with its final outing a Christmas special in 2019. That episode proved the most viewed programme in a decade, with more than 18 million glued to the box as Nessa proposed to Smithy.

Now Joanna, 46, has opened up to the Mirror on plans to continue the story. “It’s all gone absolutely mad with those rumours and it’s so sweet and lovely that everybody still loves the show,” she explained. “But cross my heart, I honestly don’t know. I’d never ask Ruth [Jones] or James [Corden] if they’re planning on writing any more. That would look a bit sad, wouldn’t it? But would I do the show again? I’d absolutely jump at it. It was a fantastic job with a fabulous cast.”

Joanna appeared to be equally in the dark when she guested on the One Show earlier this month, meanwhile. She told hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas: “I don’t know anything at all. I’ve got no other information. Absolutely nothing. Don’t know anything at all, Sorry, I’ve got no exciting information.”

She also went on to address what it’s like to be known to millions as Stacey. “When you go to drama school you just want to act, you just want to work,” she said. “And then to come out and then do a job and be known for something that the public have liked and everything, it’s just, it’s really lovely. So yeah I’m really pleased with it.”
