Gemma Collins in tears as she says she ended pregnancy as baby was ‘hermaphrodite’

Gemma Collins has tearfully confessed that she decided to terminate a pregnancy after discovering her unborn baby was intersex.

The 43-year-old former TOWIE star made the emotional revelation during an interview on the Everything I Know About Me podcast. She also claimed doctors advised her to end her pregnancy.

The term “hermaphrodite” is no longer used as it’s considered misleading and stigmatising, however is reportedly the word the GC used. The correct medical term is intersex, which refers to an organism that has both male and female reproductive organs.

Intersex conditions affect one in every 2,000 births in the UK, although actual figures could be much higher. It’s estimated there are around 30,000 intersex individuals in the UK.

Gemma has been candid about her past fertility issues and has tragically suffered three miscarriages. Her first devastating loss occurred in 2012, but she found the courage to publicly discuss it eight years later in 2020.

The reality star, unaware of her pregnancy at the time, revealed that the baby ‘died in front of her’ after she gave birth at home on her landing. Gemma experienced her second miscarriage in 2020 during the Covid pandemic.

Heartbreakingly, just a few months later, Gemma suffered a third devastating miscarriage in July 2020. Gemma became pregnant with her ex-boyfriend James Argent’s baby.

In a touching essay at the time, Gemma described the onset of her miscarriage and shared that she had no idea she was carrying on-off boyfriend Arg’s baby, until she began experiencing sharp cramps one morning. The reality star dismissed the pains as a heavy period, and tried to soldier on through the unbearable pain, until her sister insisted she see her doctor.

After being rushed to hospital, Gemma, who is now with Rami Hawash, was given the heartbreaking news that she had suffered a miscarriage. Gemma remains determined to fulfil her dream of becoming a mother and admits she thinks about the miscarriage ‘every day. ‘.

She has previously opened up about her struggle with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can impact fertility.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder resulting in enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges. Symptoms include menstrual irregularity, excess hair growth, acne, and obesity.
