Dame Maggie Smith has sadly passed away age 89 as her family announced the sad news.
She died in hospital and in a statement issued via their publicist, her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens said: “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.”
“An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.”

Maggie Smith was a beloved actress, best known for her roles in iconic British productions such as Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter franchise, during which she played the iconic teacher Professor McGonagall.
Born 28 December 1934, the actress was known for her cheeky personality and impressive career spanning many decades. She was awarded with a number of prestigious accolades throughout her life, including two Academy Awards, five BAFTAs, four Emmys, three Golden Globes, a Tony Award and six nominations for Laurence Olivier Awards.
She began her acting career on stage and established herself alongside fellow British acting icon Dame Judi Dench. Smith made her name as one of the most iconic and recognisable figures in British theatre before making her way onto the silver screen.
Her other acting credits include The Secret Garden, Sister Act, Downton Abbey: A New Era and Hook. Maggie was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth back in 1990.
Tributes have been flooding in for the star as distraught fans took to social media to share their messages. Over on X/Twitter, film fans branded her “an icon” as they mourned her passing.
This Morning’s Gyles Brandreth wrote: “The saddest news: the death of Dame Maggie Smith marks the end of a golden era & quite an extraordinary life. She was truly a great actress, ‘one of the greats’ & simply the best company: wise, witty, waspish, wonderful. One of a kind in every way & consequently irreplaceable.”
