Liam Payne had a wild X Factor journey.
The singer auditioned for the talent show for the first time back in 2008, impressing the judges with his own rendition of Frank Sinatra’s song Fly Me To The Moon. He told them: “When I’m at school in general, I think about singing all the time.”
Payne joked that he “should really be concentrating on his work” but he “thinks about singing too much”. Liam added: “It’s a dream, I’d love to do it.” Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole sent him through with flying colours, however after bootcamp Liam was sadly sent home.

After his elimination, Liam returned to the show to try out two years later. This time Liam auditioned with Cry Me A River and the judges applauded him with a standing ovation.
He even spoke about his first audition and recalled: “I was really young then, I wasn’t ready. Now I’m 16 and I’m back. I’m ready to give you another show.” In 2010, the future superstar was placed in a boy band with his fellow One Direction stars Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.
1D went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, with a huge fanbase from the moment they were formed. The group were X Factor fan favourites throughout their series, during which they competed alongside Cher Lloyd, who was 17 at the time.
Matt Cardle placed first, Rebecca Ferguson landed second place and One Direction were third, Cher Lloyd following behind in the fourth place spot. Liam Payne sadly died on 16 October 2024 after falling from his hotel room balcony while in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The 31-year-old Strip That Down singer was staying at the Hotel Cas Sur in Palermo and police in Argentina said that Liam’s fall resulted in “extremely serious injuries”.
Police told TMZ: “At 17:04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel. At 17:11 a same team arrived and verified the death of this man and we later found out that he was a singer in a musical group.”
“Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation.”
