Liz Hurley was ‘unemployable punk’ with ‘pink hair and piercings’ before fame

Liz Hurley has confessed that she was once an “unemployable punk-rocker”.

The 58-year-old icon revealed she had been an aspiring actress living on the breadline in a “small bedsit”, having “pink hair and a nose ring” before she found fame. Liz explained that at just 18 years old, she had fled her countryside suburban home life with her parents in hope of starting out her dream career.

Coming from a small town, the Gossip Girl star had believed that her punky image had been “kind of cool” in her hometown. However, having landed in London, Liz was soon made aware that her grunge look would actually deem her as “unemployable”.

Speaking to Abbey Clancy on the Exhibit A podcast, Liz was dumbfound when the host brought up her blast-from-the-past style. The business owner laughed as she confessed it had been “true”.

Abbey asked the Austin Powers star: “I read that you used to be a bit of a punk rocker with pink hair and piercings?” Laughing her question off, Liz confirmed: “Well that’s true, it was when I arrived at college. Yeah I did, I looked dreadful.”

The supermodel said: “I remember my drama teacher – who is now nearly 90 and funnily enough lives with me in one of my cottages now – I remember at the time, walking in and he looked at me and went ‘very employable’.”

She added: “I was like ‘ohh’, because that was kind of cool where I’d came from.” After her teacher’s blunt comment, Liz decided it was time for an image overhaul.

The beachwear model explained: “So yeah, gradually the nose ring came out and the hair finally went back to its own colour and I grew it. Yeah, so obviously I wasn’t very cool, I was unemployable.”

Casting her mind back to those days when she was just a small fish in a big pond, she told Abbey: “I moved to London from college when I was 18. My parents lived in the suburb country, it wasn’t like the deep dark county I live in now.”

As a teen, the Christmas In Paradise star had been yearning for another life and was ready to expand her wings and explore the UK’s capital alone. She recalled: “At that age and that time, with no disrespect to my parents who I loved and adored, all I wanted to do was to leave home.

“There was just no question of staying at home, so at 18, I was ready. Suitcases packed and ready to go. I lived in a tiny little bedsit and didn’t have a penny but I loved it,” added Liz as she spoke candidly on the podcast.
