One person wrote: “Be careful. The big climactic scene made me sick to my stomach. I had to take a break before I could come back and finish watching it.” Another fan added: “Good movie, even better book!” while someone else added: “Loved it – seen it 3x lol. Can be uncomfortable in certain scenes but worth a watch.”

Others quipped that because the original premise was written by Stephen King then of course “it’s good,” while more fans called Gerald’s Game “terrifying”. One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, switched on the horror and reported back to say: “Okay, I genuinely nearly just passed out. #GeraldsGame has been on pause for ten minutes. A film has never affected me like that before.”

The film stars Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood “as a married couple who arrive at an isolated house for a holiday”. Her husband dies of a heart attack and she is left handcuffed to the bed with no way to escape.

Many more of King’s books have been adapted into films, including Carrie, It, Pet Sematary and Children of the Corn, but Gerald’s Game caused quite a stir among the horror community. The film received many positive reviews and has a rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

After watching a rough cut of the film, Stephen King himself reportedly branded the project as “hypnotic, horrifying and terrific”. King has been described as the “king of horror” and is debut novel Carrie, which was released in 1974, cemented his place in the genre.
