NTAs chaos as winner accidentally revealed at wrong moment – and fans spot blunder

The National Television Awards seemed to air a huge blunder.

The glitzy ceremony returned on Wednesday night (September 11) at London’s O2 Arena and gathered the biggest names on British television. Comedian Joel Dommett hosted the show, which kicked off at 8pm on ITV.

All of the celebs were waiting to see if they’d won the awards they’d been nominated for. But it seems the big surprise was ruined for one category as the winner was shown on the TV broadcast before it was meant to be announced.

Coronation Street star Peter Ash played Paul Foreman, who tragically died on the soap earlier this week after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease. The actor won the Serial Drama Performance Award for his role on the soap.

Other nominees had included Angela Wynter (EastEnders), his Corrie co-star David Neilson, Diane Parish (EastEnders), and Eden Taylor-Draper (Emmerdale). On stage Peter told his co-stars: “I love you all so much.”

However, viewers at home had been left confused when they saw Peter’s character Paul shown on the broadcast while the nominees for another category – Reality Competition – were being read out. Nominee Race Across The World had been shown.

But shortly afterwards, Paul was revealed as the recipient of the Drama award. And it’s safe to say fans picked up on the apparent blunder during the ceremony.

One wrote on X: “Guess we know Corrie winning best soap then,”. Another asked: “Why was Paul on my screen there?”.

A third commented: “the random picture of paul from corrie????”. A fourth added: “Why did a dying Paul just pop up on our screens? calm down itv”.

It comes after viewers complained about host Joel Dommett’s intro just minutes into the ceremony. They took to X to rip into the opening number which saw Joel burst into a song.

Joel’s musical number featured many of the stars and their shows up for a nomination, including Davina McCall, Bradley Walsh and Ant and Dec. Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke joined Joel on stage at one point as they performed a little jazz number together.

One person complained: “Most painful intro in some time! #NTAs.” Another commented: “That was horrendous Joel.”

Another jibed: “The singing intro thing only really works when it’s someone that can actually sing,”. “What the actual f**k is this?” asked another. A fifth added: “Oh how corny.”

But even Joel couldn’t help but have a jab at himself whilst singing. He said: “So much talent to celebrated, me? I’ve not been nominated!”.
