On-screen siblings who dated in real life – marriage, secret dates and ‘incest’

For as long as there have been films and TV shows, there have been families and actors.

Many actors portraying those of families are random people who have been brought together by producers to give the best looking family for the project. The same can be said for siblings, who are quite often not as related as one might seem.

However, for some siblings that came together on-screen, there was more sparks flying off-set than anything else. Some stars of the big and small screen have managed to date, despite the somewhat strange feeling of being someone’s “brother” or “sister” on a film.

So, as we mark National Siblings Day, Daily Star looks at some on-screen couples that dated in real life.

Jennifer Grey and Matthew Broderick

Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey may have been a pin-up for the late 1980s, but before her big break with the film, she starred in the comedy action film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. In the film, Grey played the sister of the titular main character, played by Matthew Broderick.

Whilst the pair on-screen had a ratty relationship as Jennifer’s character Jeanie threatened to dupe Ferris in the film despite his truancy, off-screen the pair struck up a darling relationship.

In her critically acclaimed memoir Out of the Corner, Grey admitted: “I was as surprised as anyone when our relationship morphed from on-screen sibling rivalry to off-screen illicit romance.” She added that for much of the filming, the pair needed to be discreet about their relationship, mostly due to Broderick’s own romance woes.

Eventually, Jennifer and Matthew would go public with their relationship, going as far as to get engaged soon after in 1988. However, the pair soon decided to call time on their stint together – and Jennifer soon found love again, being engaged to Johnny Depp in the same month she broke up with her on-screen brother.

Selena Gomez and David Henrie

Pop star Selena Gomez found her fame when she starred as Alex in the Disney Channel hit Wizards of Waverley Place. She was joined by David Henrie, who played her on-screen brother Justin Russo.

During filming, rumours began to spread that the pair were secretly dating, having meet-ups in private throughout the course of 2010. Things died down, before the couple were spotted once again having a romantic dinner in 2014.

However, despite the speculation at the time, neither Selena nor David have publicly confirmed their relationship. Selena herself would go on to date musician Justin Bieber soon after, with Selena eventually being invited to David’s wedding in 2017.

Amy Poehler and Will Arnett

Saturday Night Live star Amy Poehler was at the height of her fame when she starred in comedy ice skating flick Blades of Glory in 2007. At the time, she was also already married to partner Will Arnett, having tied the knot four years previously.

Playing the Van Walderberg siblings, who were the villains of the film, the pair were told to have a somewhat more-than-siblings vibe by producers during the shoot. Things eventually reached their climax for the movie, when their characters shared a snog at the end of the film, horrifying viewers.

However, for Amy and Will, this was a walk in the park as they had been happily married for four years. But despite the sunny outlook, the pair would eventually divorce in 2014.

Maggie Grace and Ian Somerhalder

Lost duo Maggie Grace and Ian Somerhalder played step-siblings Shannon and Boone on the intense drama series. However it eventually became clear that Boone fancied Shannon – and that she played up to his attraction.

Ian’s character Boone was killed off pretty quickly after fans didn’t gel with the somewhat incestuous duo. However in real life, things continued to be spicy.

Vampire Diaries icon Ian dated Maggie dated for around one year, between 2006 and 2007.
