Only Fools and Horses first aired in September of 1981.
The show’s seventh season ended in 1991, with sporadic Christmas specials airing until 2003, and people are still thinking about the characters all these years later.
The main characters in the popular TV show were Del Boy and Rodney Trotter, and it followed the pair as they tried – and failed – to get rich quickly. But despite there being 64 episodes of Only Fools and Horses in total, people are only now realising something about Rodney.
Taking to Reddit’s ‘Only Fools and Horses’ forum, one fan wrote: “I’m rewatching the whole series again, for like the 100th time, and Rodney is so ungrateful.”
Although they admitted Del Boy “isn’t a saint”, the fan blasted Rodney for always “complaining”. They went on: “He’s always ungrateful about how much Del sacrificed for him, like being angry that Del finally had a chance at a decent life in Australia.
“Meanwhile, Del’s always been happy for Rodney regardless of what’s going on. When he got married (to someone he was never compatible with but that’s a different argument) and then when he started working with Alan.
“Del sorted out the diploma for Rodney when he couldn’t pass the exam himself, and gave him the two grand which meant he got battered by the Driscolls and Rodney comes in mouthing off about Del letting him down.” The post concluded: “Rodney was ungrateful and judgemental but never took his own initiative to actually help earn a living.”
In the comments, fans seemed to somewhat agree. One said: “Rodney can be ungrateful for everything Del has done for him.” Another added: “It’s what makes the Rolls Royce scene in Boycie’s showroom in Time on our Hands all the more poignant. Rodney recognises that Del has been there for him through thick and thin, even if he has caused trouble along the way.”
Others defended Rodney though, with one sharing: “I think this is oversimplifying it way too much. Rodney loves Del, and we see this proven multiple times throughout the series. Despite his generosity, Del is overbearing, which is what Rodney fights back against.
“I also think a lot of Rodney’s lack of gratitude is sarcastic – I never really feel that Rodney genuinely doesn’t appreciate what Del does. It’s just brotherly tension.”
And someone else responded: “If Rodney did tell Del how he really felt Del would probably call him a ‘Soppy G*t’.”
