Star Trek cult hero dies aged 70 after lengthy health battle as fans pay tribute

A Star Trek icon has sadly died after a health battle.

Actress Patti Yasutake has died at the age of 70, after a fight with a rare form of cancer – T-cell lymphoma. The sad news was confirmed by her manager and friend Kyle Fritz.

Kyle told Deadline: “Patti was my first client when I began over 30 years ago. We enjoyed every day we got to work together, and I will miss her spirit, talent and tenacity but most of all her friendship.”

The actress was best known for playing Nurse Alyssa Ogawa in the Star Trek franchise. She appeared in The Next Generation, and then in further releases in the Star Trek universe.

Throughout her career, she also recently appeared in Netflix series Beef, starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. She played Ali Wong’s character’s mother-in-law, Fumi Nakai.

Fans have been paying tribute online since the news broke. One person said: “Oh no, very sad. She will be fondly remembered and always in our memories when we watch her work!”

Someone else wrote on X: “She was great. RIP.” A third said: “I am not ready for the The Next Generation cast to leave us.”

Patti was born in LA and studied theatre at UCLA, where she graduated with honours. She went on to get her film debut in the Ron Howard comedy Gung Go, before picking her character back up again in the TV spin-off series.
