Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway was in tears before going on air as she made her return to the show for the first time since the death of her husband Derek Draper.
The TV presenter, 56, admitted she felt “so nervous” and might be a bit “wobbly” while presenting alongside co-star Ben Shephard on Thursday (February 8). She revealed that she was left in floods of tears after reuniting with the glam team who did her make-up.
“The make-up girls had me in tears this morning just by saying hello,” she said at the start of the programme. TV presenter Ben ribbed he would go easy on Kate and praised her for the “extraordinary funeral” she had for her husband Derek.

He chimed in with, “You really did Derek proud, it was an extraordinary thing,” to which Kate responded: “I definitely wanted to make it about Derek not about me. It was really lovely as well to feel so much love from everybody here.”
Mum-of-two Kate had a heart-to-heart on Good Morning Britain Monday (February 5) morning about life after Derek’s funeral last week. She revealed that before getting back on air, she’s planning on glamming up with some fake tan and lashes, teasing: “Don’t worry I am going to be looking a lot more respectable.” Kate added: “I am looking forward to coming into the world and connecting with everyone again.
Thank you for having me back but have a little patience, I might be a bit rusty. I think there is a new King. Have I caught up with that?” She had taken some time off work from the morning show when her late husband suddenly fell ill over Christmas. But just a few days post his funeral, Kate joined in via video link for an update ahead of her full-time return today.
In her heart-to-heart chat, TV presenter Kate shared that not only King Charles and Princess Catherine, but also David Beckham and his wife Victoria had sent letters of support during these tough times. The telly favourite uttered words about the chilling moment when the family was told that Derek had reached a point of no return.
“It was one of those ‘stop the clock’ moments, where you want the world to stop,” she emotionally said while adding: “And I think the vacuum you feel at that point, having been entirely focused for four years on: what do I need to do next? What can I do for Derek, what’s happening with the children? All of that, it swamps you.”
She then spoke about the countdown they were given when Derek’s condition worsened: “Thinking right, we have what we were told was 24 hours, and turned out to be more than a month of him fighting on and fighting on even though the prognosis was, this is one he won’t make through. And that’s a challenge, because for the children, when they heard the doctors say he won’t survive this, they’ve heard that so many times.”
“We knew Derek could still hear even though he couldn’t open his eyes, so it was a challenge to make sure he knew that he wasn’t letting us down, because he couldn’t get through this last one.” Despite questions flying around regarding her quick return to work after Derek’s funeral, Kate stood her ground. A new life starts now. I don’t quite know how it’s gonna be. But grief isn’t containable in a day or a month or a year,” she said.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays starting at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX
