EXCLUSIVE: Presenter Jon Kay became a full-time host on BBC Breakfast back in July 2022, and he’s still not put off by the famously early alarm clock as he loves doing the show
BBC Breakfast favourite Jon Kay has no plans to retire from the show.
Jon became a full-time host of BBC Breakfast back in July 2022 – nearly two years ago. He took over from his co-star Dan Walker, who quit the show after six years and moved to Channel 5.
You’ll catch him on the red sofa from 6am until 9.30am every Monday to Wednesday with co-host Sally Nugent. And viewers can rest assured that Jon has no plans on leaving the show anytime soon.
The 55-year-old presenter spoke exclusively to Daily Star at the 2025 BAFTA TV Awards in London on Sunday (May 11), revealing he wouldn’t be in the studio today (May 12) as he’s got the day off. BBC Breakfast won the news coverage gong for its Post Office Special.
Asked how long he sees himself hosting Breakfast, he admitted: “I’ve no idea. All I know is I’m not doing it tomorrow! I’ve got tomorrow off after this.”
He added: “I love it, I’ve been doing it, what, two year, Sunday night? I seriously love getting up every morning and doing it.”
It’s well known that BBC Breakfast presenters have to get up incredibly early in the morning to ensure they’re in the studio in time for the 6am broadcast. Dan Walker used to set an alarm for (wait for it) 3.01am to ensure he was at the studio on time.
Jon admitted that he’d suffered two major blunders in the studio recently, and he only got away with one of them because his co-host Sally spotted it just seconds before they went live. He told Daily Star: “Only the other day we were about to go back to the headlines at eight o’clock.
“With two seconds to spare, Sally said to me ‘You’ve got egg on your beard’, and I had to wipe away a good chunk of omelette. Luckily she did say that!”
Another was when he realised his fliers were undone. Unfortunately, he was stood up and delivering the news at the time, rather than seated on the red sofa.
“Two weeks before that I realised that my flies were undone when I was standing reading the news.” He quipped: “So every morning is a roller-coaster, but both were rectified.”
Jon previously admitted that he sips five cups of coffee to keep him awake in the studio, but won’t be cutting down anytime soon. “I’ve gone so far with coffee that I think I would sleep less and feel worse if I didn’t have it,” he told viewers.
