EXCLUSIVE: A body language expert has lifted the lid on what Chris Hughes and JoJo Siwa’s This Morning interview really meant as she deciphered their onscreen actions
A body language expert has dished what was really going on behind Chris Hughes and JoJo Siwa’s This Morning interview.
On Monday (April 28), the two CBB housemates were quizzed about their reality TV experience and their controversially close bond. We asked celebrity body language expert Inbaal Honigman her hot take on the situation – and whether or not they are more than platonic pals.
Speaking on behalf of Genting Casino, body language expert Inbaal Honigman shared: “As the camera pans towards the pair, it is apparent that they’re not sitting as a couple.
“There is a gap between them, clear and marked, all the way down their bodies. Both JoJo and Chris have their hands gathered in front of their bodies. Hers are lowered and in her lap, calm yet protective, whereas his are tense, raised and covering his heart.
“JoJo uncrosses her ankles and puts her arms by her sides, making eye contact with Chris, showing that she’s starting to feel more comfortable, and Chris pats her knee. This knee pat is executed as if it is meant to soothe JoJo, but it’s likely that it’s actually soothing for Chris, who is wanting to make physical contact.
“As they weren’t touching each other before, Chris’s hand on JoJo’s knee appears domineering, showing that he’s in control of the interaction. At the same time his right hand is tense, and Chris’s stiff fingers indicate stress.”
The expert added: “When Chris talks about his experience in the house, JoJo’s leg is crossed away from him. This is an attempt to put some distance between them. When JoJo chats about her expectations from CBB, her body language is quite open – she uses broad arm gestures, her smile is toothy and genuine.
“Chris appears extremely nervous while JoJo talks, he touches his chin, covers his mouth and fidgets. His fingers around his mouth indicate that he’s trying to hold something back. Where her arms are open, showing honesty, his arms are a masterclass of protective gestures, covering his midsection and fiddling with his rings.
“Then, Chris is much calmer when he explains how relentless the Big Brother experience is. He talks with his hands which shows honesty, and he stops fidgeting. As he’s talking, JoJo is seen nodding alongside him. This is a friendly, supportive move, intended to show him that he’s not alone. JoJo’s hand on Chris’s shoulder is similarly supportive, showing him that she’s got his back.
“As JoJo discusses the insights that she considered while in the house, her body language is still open and honest. Her crossed legs may say that she’s not letting it all hang out, but her arms are animated, and her lowered eyes are pensive, she’s thinking of the right words to use in order to convey her true meaning.”
The expert also touches on her feeling vulnerable and Chris thinking about how he could be looking to the public.
She continued: “Chris’ eyes at that time are not on JoJo. Rather than create eye contact with her in her moment of public vulnerability, he’s gazing into the middle distance, lost in his own thoughts and twisting his jewellery absent mindedly. While JoJo is bearing her soul, Chris is considering how her decisions would impact him. During JoJo’s raw retelling of her wanting to fix things in her life straightaway, her arm is raised onto the back of the sofa, very lightly touching Chris’ shoulder. She could be comforted by his closeness, and by being able to touch him. It’s a very subtle contact, but to JoJo it is necessary in that moment.
“At the very end of JoJo’s answer about her very public split during the wrap party, we see her lips thinning as she bites down on them. It lets us know that she’s sad and tense to have to talk about it, and there might be more details that she’s holding back.
Although she believes the pair could be conflicted when it comes to how they truly feel about their friendship.
The expert shared: “When asked about their relationship, JoJo and Chris respond very differently as Ben asks the question. JoJo smiles quite happily, she knows her mind and has nothing to hide. Chris, however, is seen tugging at his shirt, ‘airing’ it. He might be feeling a little warm, which suggests that he is nervous. He’s certainly not smiling.
“Starting to answer, he touches his nose, rubs his nostril, touches his tache… all this face touching can be linked with dishonesty. He’s not entirely committed to revealing the truth. JoJo nods and keeps her gaze on Chris’s face. She agrees with what he says, but what he says might not be his truth. Chris’s nervous body language could suggest that he’s trying to give the answers that JoJo would like.
“There’s a tiny moment, almost imperceptible, that Chris leans back and his shoulder touches JoJo’s hand inadvertently. At that moment, JoJo curls her hand, away from his touch. It suggests that she feels safer when their physical contact is on her terms.
“When the presenters push the idea of a romantic future, JoJo’s pats on Chris’s shoulders turn into fists. That shows her sympathy and affection becoming more platonic, to signify camaraderie, not romance.
“Discussing JoJo’s departure, Chris looks genuinely sad, he shuffles in his seat uncomfortably. JoJo does a ‘sadface’, but it’s more of a comedy face. JoJo’s head on Chris’s shoulder is a platonic cuddle, there are no romantic clues in there.”
