Gareth Ritter, 43, who appeared on Educating Cardiff, was assistant head and music teacher at Cardiff’s Willows High, but he’s now been arrested and charged, according to the police
A Channel 4 star has been charged with sexual assault and two counts of making an indecent image of a child.
Awarding winning teacher Gareth Ritter featured in Channel 4 show Educating Cardiff has been accused of sexual assault, two counts of making an indecent image of a child, and one count of distributing an indecent image of a child. The 43-year-old is due to face the charges in court later this year.
Ritter was assistant head and music teacher at Cardiff’s Willows High and a conductor of Ebbw Valley Brass Band and the Lydbrook Band. He appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court in November 2024 and will appear at Crown Court in November of this year.
South Wales Police said in a statement: “Gareth Ritter from Monmouthshire appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on November 5, 2024”. A Cardiff Council spokesman said: “The council is unable to comment until criminal proceedings are concluded”.
The alleged offences took place between May 2015 and July 2015 – one month before the TV show aired. He was a music teacher and assistant head during his time on the series, which followed the development of children at Willows High School.
The Education Workforce Council says Ritter has been issued an interim suspension from teaching as of December 12 last year. It says he is “ineligible for registration – subject to interim suspension order”.
Ebbw Valley Brass Band said Ritter, the group’s founding musical director, had resigned “due to personal reasons”. It’s claimed the band is looking for a new musical director and asking candidates to get in touch “in complete confidence”.
In 2013, Ritter won the Pearson award for innovative use of technology. He was known for his use of technology within the classroom, including motion capture technology.
According to WalesOnline, he will face trial at Cardiff Crown Court in November.
