Liam Payne tragically died aged 31 in Argentina last October without making a will, but the late One Direction singer has left behind a huge fortune worth £24.3m
Liam Payne’s son Bear reportedly won’t inherit his famous dad’s £24m estate until he’s older.
The One Direction star tragically died aged 31 on October 16 last year after falling from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The singer didn’t make a will before he died but has left behind a huge £24m fortune – and it’s expected his eight-year-old son Bear will inherit this.
Liam welcomed Bear with ex Cheryl in 2017 – the pair were together for around two years between 2016 and 2018. Cheryl – and music industry lawyer Richard Bray – have been named as administrators of Liam’s estate, meaning they will be legally responsible for his fortune.
Payne left behind money, property and possessions worth over £24m when he died. Court documents show that the pop star left a total of £28,595,000, which was later reduced to £24,280,000 after his expenses and debts were paid.
It’s claimed Cheryl wants to “protect” Bear and will likely shield him from the inheritance until he’s in his twenties. It’s said the former Girls Aloud singer wants to put the money aside until Bear is older and has sought advice from the trustees of Liam’s estate.
A source allegedly close to Cheryl told The Sun: “Cheryl wants to protect Bear and is going to stop him receiving Liam’s inheritance until he’s at least 25 years old, if not older.
“She feels she wants Bear to be of an age where he can make informed decisions about the money. There are lots of conversations ongoing and Cheryl may even allow the money to be given only in chunks throughout his late 20s and 30s.
“She wants him to still have ambition and the drive to succeed without the back-up of the money — and she’s aware that people may want to befriend him because they are aware of his situation. Cheryl has spoken to the trustees and the money will be invested until Bear is of the right age to start receiving some of it.”
It’s believed Bear will inherit Liam’s estate in a trust – and that Liam’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy won’t get any of the money. An insider told the Mail: “Liam had some very sensible people around him for a time and he adored Bear so much.
“He always wanted to do the right thing by him financially. It is a small consolation that Bear will never want for anything, that he will at least benefit from that.”
Liam and Cheryl maintained a close relationship after they split – the singer described Cheryl as a “fantastic mum” and said at the time: “We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world.”
When somebody dies without writing a will, their children normally inherit their estate if there is no living husband, wife or civil partner. Cheryl and Liam never married but were co-parents to Bear.
Daily Star has contacted Cheryl’s representatives for comment.
