The iconic yellow three-wheeler from Only Fools and Horses has been crowned Britain’s favourite pop culture van.
The Regal Robin old banger, driven by brothers Del Boy and Rodney Trotter in the classic comedy, took nearly a quarter of the vote. In second place was the white vehicle in the Ghostbusters films with 18% followed by the multi-coloured Mystery Machine in cartoon Scooby Doo.
The A-Team and Postman Pat’s vans also ranked high along with the motors from Wallace and Gromit and Jim Carey flick Dumb and Dumber.
Tom Banks, spokesperson for website Go.Compare, which carried out the poll, said: “Vans have long featured in popular culture, and there’s a lot of nostalgia when it comes to the UK’s favourites – whether it’s the iconic 1983 GMC Vandura from the A-Team series, or the groovy Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo.
“If you happen to have a van in your life off-screen as well, then it’s important to look after it – Only Fools (and Horses) would miss a service or forget to compare insurance before it renews. Remember that the type of van insurance you need depends on several factors, from how you use the vehicle, to its load weight. “
The survey also uncovered an age divide with 18-24-year-olds quizzed choosing the Ghostbusters van as their favourite.
People aged 25 to 34 went for The Mystery Machine while 45-54-year-olds preferred the black GMC Vandura motor driven by B.A. Barracus in 1980s series The A Team.
Last year, the Only Fools and Horses van was sold at auction for £26,000, £8,000 more than the asking price. It’s understood a private collector flogged the car along with props from the show including a blow-up doll that featured in the series six episode, Danger UXD.
The vehicle, which can reach a top speed of 55mph, was used for two series which included the famous chandelier scene in the episode A Touch of Glass.
