EastEnders icon’s forgotten romance with Stephen Mulhern has left fans gobsmacked

EastEnders fans were gobsmacked to discover that Walford icon once dated telly fave Stephen Mulhern.

Emma Barton, famed for her role as Honey Mitchell, has been a staple on the BBC One soap since 2005. She has had viewers hooked with her character’s storylines, from battling an eating disorder to her eyebrow-raising fling with young Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick).

Recently, Honey and Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) finally said ‘I do’, but their big day was marred by a catastrophic explosion at the Queen Vic, which saw the demise of Albert Square’s own Martin Fowler (James Bye).

But it’s off-screen where fans are now catching up on Barton’s past romance with the Catchphrase and Dancing on Ice host. The pair reportedly hit it off during a 2008 pantomime production of Snow White, where Barton dazzled as the titular character and Mulhern played her sidekick Muddles.

Despite keeping their love life under wraps, the celeb duo parted ways in 2011, with Britain’s Got More Talent star Mulhern revealing the relationship simply reached its “natural end”.

However, he’s keeping his spirits high about finding ‘the one’, even with his chaotic work schedule. In a heart-to-heart with Celebs Now back in 2018, Mulhern shared, “Last time I went on a date was about four years ago. That makes me sound really sad! I need a life. I need to stop working so much.”, reports Plymouth Live.

Fans have been absolutely gobsmacked to discover that Stephen had a thing with Emma, with one gobsmacked fan posting on an EastEnders Facebook fan page, “Didn’t realise these two have been in a relationship.”

Another joined in with surprise, commenting, “I would not put them together, I love Stephen.” While another was just as shocked: “I had no idea that they were a couple.” Since their split, Emma’s gone and bagged herself musician Jason Perry – the voice behind the alt-rock band A, but as for Stephen? No word yet on any new love interests.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
