A famous DJ and house pioneer has died aged 54 as fans pay tribute to talented star.

Chicago ghetto house pioneer DJ Funk has passed away – leaving music fans heartbroken. The DJ was receiving palliative care following a battle with cancer – adding to more tragic news in the showbiz world today.

The influential Dance Mania artist’s friend DJ Slugo confirmed the news in a statement shared with Resident Advisor on Wednesday (March 5).

His family members are fundraising to cover the producer and DJ’s funeral costs and the campaign has currently raised over more than $32,000, with donations still being taken. Fans can contribute here.

The DJ will be sorely missed by friends and fans

The page reads: “Dj Funk, a talented artist who has brought so much joy and inspiration to so many through his music, is now facing the heartbreaking reality of planning for his final farewell.”

Fans have continued to top of the fundraiser whilst leaving their tributes to the star. One said: “In the late 90’s Chicago party scene Funk was a LEGEND. Thank you for the countless memories and endless nights dancing – there will never be a time quite like that again! Your memory will live on in your music forever.”

A second added: “So sad to see him leaving that young… He left a footprint on the electronic music scene. A message to his children: my thoughts are with you and you should be very proud of your dad.”

While a third penned: “Funk! It was always a pleasure sharing the decks with you throughout Canada during the 90’s and 2000’s. You were an inspiration to not only me but to countless people. I hope you can pull through this, but just know you made a difference to many people.”

Funk was one of the most iconic names on the Dance Mania roster and made some impressive contributions to its catalogue such as singles like ‘House The Groove’, ‘Street Trax II’, and ‘Trax From The Dark Side’, alongside seminal genre albums such as ‘Pumpin The Trax’, ‘Freaky Style Take: 2’ and ‘Booty House’.
