Glastonbury headliners The 1975 divide opinion with ‘insufferable’ set on Pyramid Stage

Many fans of the indie band reportedly opted to leave the gig as they headlined the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury on Friday – with some partygoers being left in despair at the group’s set

Indie band The 1975 divided opinion as they took to their Glastonbury headline slot.

The band, known for their tracks “The Sound” and “Chocolate”, took to the stage on Friday (June 27) for their headline set at the iconic music festival on Worthy Farm. Fronted by iconic lead singer Matty Healy, the band performed some of their classic hits, as well as some of the band’s latest efforts.

With the band being the first major headlining act of the Glastonbury festival, many were expecting to see a huge crowd amass for the quirky band to perform. However, as Matty – together with other group members Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald and George Daniel – got on stage start their set, the number of supporters appeared to be smaller than originally hoped.

According to the Mirror, one festivalgoer described the amount of people who attended The 1975’s set was “surprisingly sparse”. Other acts that had played during the day – such as CMAT and Lewis Capaldi – reportedly drew way bigger crowds, leaving The 1975 in favour of finding other artists to watch.

The source explained that some people attending the festival soon realised the band were not to their tastes and opted to move away from the Pyramid Stage to look for other acts. It came as Matty and his co-stars kicked off their set with the track “Happiness”, with other well-known songs following suit.

During their performance, the staging for the gig also generated some conversation, as there were various graphics being shown on a screen behind the band. A car was also seen on stage at one point of the show – with Matty opting to sing the song “Somebody Else” inside of it, as well as occasional strobe lighting.

But despite the band’s supposed meagre turnout, viewers watching the set on BBC iPlayer found that there was a large group of fans singing and dancing to the band’s biggest hits. This came despite the fact that many viewers were unable to watch the set, due to the service breaking down midway through the performance.

Taking to social media, many fans of the band were thrilled to hear the band take to the main stage of the festival. Whilst watching the show, one user penned: “The 1975 set list tonight has been INSANE; if you are at Glastonbury tonight I hope you’re appreciating this.”

A second account added: “The 1975 were incredible, amazing set, loved it a lot!” However, others were less impressed, with one disgruntled viewer writing: “I haven’t tweeted in over a year; however, I had to get this off my chest.

“The 1975 are s***e and Matty Healy is insufferable,” the user ranted. “He’s trying his hardest to look like he’s a genuine rock star; they were never Glastonbury headliners and they’ve just proved us all right.”

Saturday and Sunday are set to bring more talented acts to the various stages during this year’s festival. Neil Young will take to the stage on Saturday (June 28) as part of the Legends slot, while Good 4 U songstress Olivia Rodrigo will close the festival with her own headline set on Sunday (June 29).
