Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has taken on the main role in a movie for the first time in 10 years – and was shocked to find so-called intimacy coaches on set with her and leading man Timothee Chalamet
Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up about her filming experiences and revealed she told intimacy co-ordinators to ‘step back’ while filming intimate scenes.
The actress was speaking specifically about filming with Oscar nominee Timothee Chalamet. The pair star in new movie Marty Supreme. Chalamet, 29, stars as a ping pong protégé, while Paltrow, 52, plays the wife of a rival professional who falls into bed with him. Paltrow admits that the film is very racy, with more than a few not safe for work moments.
“I mean, we have a lot of sex in this movie,” Paltrow told Vanity Fair. “There’s a lot.” Often movies will hire an intimacy co-ordinator to ensure actors on set are safe and feel comfortable – but Paltrow said they’re not always helpful.
“There’s now something called an intimacy co-ordinator, which I did not know existed.”
“I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on’,” she said. “We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back’.”
Paltrow continued: “I don’t know how it is for kids who are starting out, but… if someone is like, ‘OK, and then he’s going to put his hand here,’ I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that.”
The actor turned wellness guru stepped in front of the camera for her last starring film role came 10 years ago. Since then, things have changed.
The ‘step back’ comment specifically came when the co-ordinator asked if she’d be comfortable with a particular scene.
Co-ordinators popped up on movie sets in the wake of the Me Too movement, which exposed abuse in the industry. Paltrow was actually one of the first to call out Harvey Weinstein for his sexual assault.
Paltrow even joked on the age gap between to the two leads. She suggested Chalamet was “14,” while she was “109.”
However, the age gap was not a big issue during filming. Paltrow described Timothee as a great co-worker, who takes his work very seriously.
Adding to this, she branded him “polite,” and “properly raised.” She even went as far as to call him “a thinking man’s sex symbol”.
Movie fans will have to hold tight for a while, as the film is not due to be released in cinemas until Christmas Day 2025 in the US. Viewers from the United Kingdom have even longer to wait, as it releases over the pond on January 1 2026.
