A beloved voice actor, best known for roles on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, has sadly died and tributes from gutted fans have flooded the internet
An iconic Cartoon Network voice actor has died.
George Lowe, who was best known as the voice of Space Ghost, has sadly died aged 67. The Florida-born star started his career on radio before transitioning to voice-over work.
He has previously worked for TBS and Cartoon Network before landing a role on Space Ghost Coast To Coast for Cartoon Network, which was later aired on Adult Swim.
A representative spoke to Deadline about the actor’s death and confirmed he passed on 2 March, with no cause of death released as of yet. George’s friend Marvellous Marvin Boone paid tribute to him on Facebook, writing: “I’m beyond devastated.”
“My Zobanian brother and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness. A part of me had also died.”
“He was a supremely talented artist and voice actor. A true warm hearted Genius. Funniest man on Earth too.”
“I’ve stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some of mine. He was also the voice of Space Ghost and so much more. Pweeloto.”
Adult Swim also took to X/Twitter to share one of his jokes as a tribute: “I was dead long before you were born, and I’ll be dead long before you die.”
Underneath, fans rushed to share their respects for the voice-actor as one person demanded a “special schedule” for Adult Swim with a “full length episode”. Someone called him “the king of Adult Swim” while another branded him “a real one”.
“Noooooo I am so sad, a part of my childhood is gone. Sending [prayers]. My first experience with George’s buttery voice was with Nickelodeon and his work on their bumps in the mid to later 80s,” reminisced another X/Twitter user.
Lowe’s most iconic role of Space Ghost is a Hanna-Barbera superhero originally released in the 1960s as a talk show host. The character performed interviews with celebrity guests, who he treated as fellow superheroes.
Celebs that starred on his show include Jim Carrey, Adam West and The Ramones. It was first aired back in 1994 until 1999, then later revived on Adult Swim from 2001 to 2004.
His show was so successful that Lowe’s Space Ghost character also starred in the spinoff series Cartoon Planet and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theatres. Recently, George appeared in a 2024 episode of Jellystone.
