Former Strictly Come Dancing pro who won Dancing on Ice in 2019, has opened up about the injuries that have been sustained by stars on the current series, as many drop out
A former Dancing on Ice champ has revealed all about going under the knife to fix an injury he got while competing on the TV competition.
James Jordan, now 46, performed on the ITV rink back in 2019 and bagged the trophy alongside his partner, Vanessa James. The ex-Strictly Come Dancing fave hasn’t shied away from revealing his thought on the show since hanging up his skates. After tuning into last weekend’s frosty face-offs, James had a talk with Sky Vegas for the Mirror this week. The one-time Celebrity Big Brother contestant opened up about the perils of pirouetting on ice, branding the sport “tough” and reminiscing over his own battle scars from the show.
The current series has seen its fair share of casualties, with several celebs bowing out due to injuries. Paralympic powerhouse Dame Sarah Storey was the first to hang up her skates, revealing a fractured ankle just before the series kicked off.
Not long after, comedian Josh Jones called it quits post-launch, confessing he too had sustained an injury during rehearsals, reports the Mirror.
Just this month, ice pro Vanessa Bauer announced that she’d be bowing out after a backstage blunder. A trip to the docs and an MRI later, she discovered she’d done a proper number on herself with “a completely torn ligament, grade three sprain injury and a major grade two sprain injury.”
And if that wasn’t enough injuries, it’s been revealed that fellow pro Eric Radford is sitting out for at least a week following a rehearsal mishap.
James opened up about the dangers of competitive ice skating, emphasising that even pros like Vanessa Bauer are not immune as she had to bow out due to injury. He shared: “We’re talking about professionals here – Vanessa [Bauer] had to pull out through injury, and it just shows you how tough ice skating is. When something goes slightly wrong, it can cause injuries.”
Talking about his own rough experience, James revealed: “I had to have shoulder surgery after the show, because when I fell, I tore my rotator cuff. I loved doing the show and loved being part of it, but I knew what potentially could happen to me, and unfortunately, it did happen to me.”
Reflecting on the risks involved in the competition, he concluded: “The day before the final I tore my rotator cuff, and I had to have surgery, but that’s the risk I was prepared to take. I signed up to the show and I knew what I was doing. People might say it’s too dangerous, but the celebrities have decided to go on the show.”
The ‘Dancing on Ice’ winner revealed after his 2019 victory that surgery was imminent for his injury. He had considered quitting the contest before the final but decided to push through after a physio session.
During a recent interview, James opened up about the show’s critique for its innuendos and jokes. When quizzed on whether he believes it remains suitable for family viewing, he responded: “It is a family show – the whole point of adult innuendos is that the younger people won’t understand it anyway. That’s the whole point of that. The adults understand it, but the younger people don’t. If they do understand, it is because they’re of a certain age.”
He then made a call for “more British humour” on television, stating: “As far as I’m concerned, we need to have more of that on TV. We need to have more honesty. We need to have more British humour, the great British humour that we seem to be losing.”
