EXCLUSIVE: The Babyshambles troubadour returned to finish the show after he wandered off to take his pet pooch Gladys for a walk after she starting barking mid-performance
The Libertines star Pete Doherty showed what a hero he is when he paused a gig to take his dog for a walk. Pooch Gladys joined The Time For Heroes singer on stage at London’s Blackheath Halls on Tuesday. When the star’s pet, a mastiff cross, started barking, Dohety announced he needed to take her walkies.
One of his pals, musician Jack Jones, entertained the crowd by reading from his tour diary, before the Babyshambles troubadour returned to finish the show. The singer, 46, spent nearly five minutes away and was met with cheers when he returned to the stage.
It’s not the first time Gladys has joined her master, as the canine also appeared alongside him at the Electric Ballroom in north London earlier this month.
He has previously said that “obviously Gladys comes with me everywhere”. But he told the NME that it got a bit much for his Libertines bandmates, as she will have a “sniff around at night to see who’s in the bunk”.
His co-singer Carl Barat found it “too much”.
The Star previously reported Doherty told fans at a recent gig that he is in “worse health” now than when he was on heroin because of his newfound diet of booze and cheese.
He has since relocated to France and has found love and happiness as well as managing to kick hard drugs, but Pete’s new lease of life has taken a toll on his health. Doherty told the crowd at one of his recent shows that he is at risk of losing some of his limbs if he doesn’t sort things out.
Pete, 45, told fans how he is facing having to amputate his toes due to his health battle with Type 2 diabetes. He was diagnosed with the condition last year, and has had to perform while sitting in a chair at times.
While playing in Munich, Germany, he updated fans about how his health is doing. He revealed: ‘I saw the doctor today and he said you need to stay off your feet as much as you can otherwise you’ll lose your toes.’
The risk of foot or leg amputation is high for people with severe diabetes. According to the NHS: “Foot problems such as ulcers and infections, which can sometimes result in you needing surgery to remove your foot or leg (an amputation)”
Doherty previously talked about the diagnosis, confessing: ‘I’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes – and at the moment, I’m lacking the discipline to tackle cholesterol.’ He also told The Guardian that he had replaced his drug addiction with food and drink.
