The acting legend said he refuses to let ‘bullies like Trump win’ and remarked how he cringed at the way the US President ‘beat up’ Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier this year
Robert De Niro lives in constant fear he’ll be whacked by one of Donald Trump’s gun-loving MAGA supporters.
The movie hard nut has spent years slating the Orange Manbaby in public. He’s now confessed he “always” think about the risks to his safety that his attacks carry.
But defiant Bob, 81, stressed he’s determined not to “let bullies win” when it comes to speaking out against Trump. The Oscar-winning Goodfellas actor said: “We have to stop what’s going on, it’s insane. We can’t have apathy and silence. You have to speak up and risk being harassed.”
With a wealth of around £400million-plus, De Niro can afford security and protection. But when asked by an interviewer if he feared for his safety due to his constant Trump bashing, he admitted: “Yeah, you always think about it, of course. But I’m too old for all that.
“The man is a bully and you can’t let bullies win. If a bully comes for your lunch money on Monday, he’s going to ask for more on Tuesday.
“You have to stand up. And I wouldn’t want to look at myself if I didn’t.”
Robert added he hated the scene where Trump and his deputy president JD Dunce “beat up” Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their toe-curling meeting at the White House. He warned about Trump’s legacy: “Historically, this won’t be forgotten.”
Robert also slated the US president’s plan to impose 100% tariffs on movies made outside America. He said the film business now has to “worry about the wrath of Trump and make their decisions on that basis”.
Robert added: “Do I succumb or do I say no? There are some universities that have already said no. There are some legal firms that have said no.
“And that’s important because it inspires other people. It gives people strength and inspires them to fight.
“Because that’s what America is all about. Look at the westerns – it’s all right there.
“The bad guys come into town and take over and what does the sheriff do? He stands up. That’s in all our movies.”
Bob also used his recent speech while picking up his lifetime achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival to rail Trump’s tariffs on the film industry – branding the Republican a “philistine”. He said: “America’s philistine president has had himself appointed head of one of America’s premier cultural institutions.
“He has cut funding and support to the arts, humanities and education. And now he announced a 100 per cent tariff on films made outside the United States.
“You can’t put a price on creativity, but apparently, you can put a tariff on it.” Robert also called on “everyone who cares about liberty” to protest against Trump.
