Simon Cowell’s nightmare accident sparked concerns he would ‘never walk again’

Simon Cowell has opened up about the injuries he sustained from a horrifying accident which left doctors and surgeons fearing that the X Factor judge wouldn’t be able to walk

Simon Cowell’s doctors feared the worst after he sustained brutal injuries.

The X Factor star explained that his surgeon was uncertain if he would ever walk again when Simon broke his back in three places after being thrown off an electric bike at his Malibu, California home.

He received treatment for a concussion, a broken arm, and a broken back. The fall led to Cowell having a metal rod inserted into his spine, along with several procedures and surgeries.

In a recent conversation with Elizabeth Day on the How To Fail podcast, Simon discussed the crash’s impact. Cowell revealed that he ‘could have died’ and his surgeon was worried about their ability to ‘fix’ his back.

Simon said: “He showed me the X-ray and he said: ‘Look, I’m not going to lie Simon, I don’t know if I can fix this which means you probably won’t walk and secondly, the operation could take 11 hours,” reports the Mirror.

“They said the obvious: ‘It could go wrong’ and all I could think about was my family and everything. In that moment you kind of realise the most important thing is your health and don’t do stupid things.”

The accident served as a ‘wake-up call’ about his life, teaching Simon to stop taking enormous risks: “It was a wake-up moment, which is I’m crazy.”

“It kind of happened for a reason because I thought I was fit but then when I had to do all the physio after, just walking, they make you walk very quickly, I pretty much couldn’t move and then I started to walk a lot and thought: ‘Oh God, I was in a really bad place’.”

Simon revealed that he knew instantly he had broken his back when he was flung from his bike following an unexpected wheelie: “I shipped it in from England, couldn’t wait to drive it.

“I was in the driveway and my son was there and I pulled the throttle, it did the biggest wheelie and it threw me like 7-8ft in the air. I landed on my back and the second I landed I thought: ‘S***, I know I’ve broken my back’ because I could feel it.”
