Charley Scalies, who played Thomas ‘Horseface’ Pakusa in 12 episodes of The Wire and Coach Molinaro in The Sopranos, has sadly died and his heartbroken daughter announced the news
Actor Charley Scalies has died.
Known for his roles in The Wire and The Sopranos, the star has sadly passed away following an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
The actor played Thomas ‘Horseface’ Pakusa across 12 episodes of The Wire and as Tony Soprano’s old football coach, Coach Molinaro, in the iconic Mafia series.
Charley’s daughter Anne Marie Scalies broke the news to the Hollywood Reporter on Sunday [May 4], sharing how Charley always put family first: “Charley emphasised the importance of family, stating that loving their mother, spending quality time, and teaching respect and hard work were key elements of fatherhood.”
“He saw a father’s duty as leading children towards independence. His tales will be missed by his wife, kids, and grandkids, but his memory will live on in their hearts.”
Back in 2019, Charley opened up about his affection for his character from The Wire in 2003: “As with all the other characters I’ve been blessed to portray, Horseface lives inside of me. I invite him out to play as needed,” reports the Express.
Fans and friends have taken to social media to honour Charley, with heartfelt messages like: “RIP Horseface, Charley Scalies.”
Another fan said: “Heartbroken to report that Charley Scalies, Horseface on The Wire and Coach Molinaro from The Sopranos has passed away,” while another person said: “Charley Scalies who played Coach Molinaro in The Sopranos has died aged 84, thank you for the memories RIP.”
Born on 19 July 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Scalies first ventured into feature films with 1995’s Condition Red and later appeared alongside Al Pacino and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in Two Bits.
In 1996, he bagged roles in a couple of episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street followed by a part as Mario in Law and Order. Scalies played Horseface in The Wire in 2003.
