Eddie Large's family share heartbreaking tribute to comedian after tragic death

Ryan McGinnis, has paid tribute to his father after it was announced comedian Eddie Large died today, age 78, from heart failure after contracting coronavirus in hospital.

The Glaswegian comedian, whose real name was Edward McGinnis, died in the early hours of this morning after complications due to coronavirus.

Eddie rose to fame in the early 70s as part of the legendary comedy-duo Little and Large, along with comic Syd Little.

Taking to Facebook this morning, his only son penned a heartbreaking tribute to his father, who “fought so bravely for so long”.

He said: “It is with great sadness that mum and I need to announce that my dad, Edward McGinnis, passed away in the early hours of this morning.

“He had been suffering with heart failure and unfortunately, whilst in hospital, contracted the coronavirus, which his heart was sadly not strong enough to fight.”

Reflecting on his father’s final days, Ryan added: “Dad had fought so bravely for so long. Due to this horrible disease we had been unable to visit him at the hospital but all of the family and close friends spoke to him every day.

“We will miss him terribly and we are so proud of everything he achieved in his career with Syd and know that he was much loved by the millions that watched them each week.

“RIP Dad. We love you and miss you from all the family.”

Eddie is survived by his son Ryan, his two daughters and his wife of 37 years, Patsy Ann Scott.

Since news of his death broke, tributes have been flooding in from comedy greats around the world, each paying tribute the comedian’s lasting legacy.

Tommy Cannon wrote: “Devastated to hear that my good friend Eddie Large has passed.. very heavy hearts at home today. Mine and Hazel’s hearts go out to Patsy and the family.”

While Little Britain’s Matt Lucas penned: “Eddie Large (along with his supersonic friend Syd) was really lovely and kind and encouraging to me when I was a nipper on Shooting Stars. So sad to hear of his passing.”

Eddie formed the double act Little and Large with pal Syd Little in 1963, becoming household names after a 1971 appearance on on to ITV’s Opportunity Knocks.

Running until 1991, their BBC comedy series – The Little and Large Show – boasted 15million viewers at its peak.
