American country singer John Prine dies aged 73 after coronavirus battle

Country music singer John Prine has died just days after being rushed to hospital after developing coronavirus symptoms.

The Grammy Award winner was 73-years-old at the time of his death.

A statement shared by his family confirmed that he had been admitted to hospital on Thursday before being intubated on Saturday after his condition deteriorated.

Taking to Twitter, the official account for Prine shared a statement which read: “This is hard news for us to share.

“But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love and support now. And know that we love you, and John loves you.”

John’s wife, Fiona Whelan Prine announced that she was suffering from covid-19 on March 19th and the couple had been self-isolating individually.

Despite being tested, Prine’s results were “indeterminate”.

Fiona had earlier told fans: “To many people have reached out to see how we are, and especially how John is because many of you know that he’s had a lot of different health issues, and he is definitely in that vulnerable population that they’ve been talking about.

“So far, he’s fine. He’s always got a little something going on…he may not have this virus, and I really want to keep it that way, because this would not be a good virus for him to get.”

John has survived cancer twice and was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013, leading to part of his lung being removed.

He underwent stent surgery in 2019 and postponed dates of his 2020 tour to undergo hip surgery.

1992 and 2006 saw Prine pick up the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. This year he took home the Lifetime Achievement Award and was subsequently placed into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
